Materials Handling

Materials Handling refers to managing heavy loads in a warehouse
setting as well as loading and unloading trucks and ships. The many
types of machinery available make this work relatively easy in today's
workplace. When one speaks of handling material, the general
assumption is that it refers to bulk material that comes in large
containers or crates or is large package of several cases. Some of the
types of equipment used for this include elevators, conveyor belts,
stackers and hoppers.

On loading docks, large cranes are used for loading and unloading the
material. The size of the crane depends on the type of material and
the size of the area in which the word takes place. Forklifts are one
of the most commonly used methods of transporting cargo from one area
to another both inside and out. They can be found in all type s of
industries from warehouses for groceries to lumber yards and
railroads.

The use of machinery helps to lift very heavy loads quite easily. An
operator uses controls to lift up the container and deposit it in
another location. Some forklifts only have an up and down movement in
that they are best used for reaching high places. Others have a side
tip that let them tip over the container to dump out the material
inside. The operator can drive the forklift and with the rear wheel
drive, it makes it easier to maneuver them in very small spaces.

Depending on the location and the nature of the work, cranes can be
mobile so that they move from place to place. Others are fastened to
the ground, while others are mounted on trucks.

There are specialized ways of handling different types of materials.
For the most part the material is packaged and loaded on wooden
pallets that have spaces where the blades of the forklift fit in order
to lift them. For other types of bulk cargo such as iron ore or
liquids, they have to be stored in heavy containers and lifted by
means of platforms or elevators.
